I have read this series so many times, but analysing the book this time I realise how much it annoys me. The first book was fantastic, it was heartbreaking, it was horror and it was a really interesting story. This book really does become a soap opera with Cathy's ridiculous choices, her impulsiveness and excuses for bad behaviour. Yes I guess it is possible that she could turn out like this, but I just want to shake her. She really has no idea what love is. I will still give it a high score because I have read the series so many times, but this might actually be my last time.

it's really depressing to re-read a book that was so wonderful the first time around, only to discover that your interpretation of it at 15 was so misguided.

julian marquet was a tragic hero to me at 15. he was the embodiment of everything dangerous and sexy.

at 25, he's the embodiment of my abusive ex.

some books shouldn't be re-read.

This was readable and entertaining but repetitive, drawn out, poorly written, and poorly conceived. Flowers in the Attic was a successful gothic horror, but, unfortunately, Petals on the Wind fell far from the mark and ended up being a bad soap opera family drama that beggared belief. I’m hoping the next book in the series returns to the horror genre, although I may not read it because this book has a tied-up ending.

Cathy seems to drive people to their deaths...I'm almost frightened to read the next book.
