Green manages to make a book with a heartbreaking premise heartwarming through his humourous, relatable writing style; Hazel, Augustus and Isaac are relatable, silly teenagers, and Green doesn't let their cancer define them. He gives life to a group of people who are often dehumanised in the media, but doesn't let them all get away with the idyllic life: he also depicts the traumatic, painful aspects of terminal illness too. Yet, despite all of this, his book has an overwhelming message of hope: readers learn life advice as the protagonists do.
