This has probably been my favorite of the Barefoot Gen series so far. The first two books in the series, dealing with the bombing and the immediate results, are easily the most "forever seared into my brain." In them were images that I cannot shake. These were strong for their visual storytelling and I'll likely always think of the first two volumes when I reflect on this series.
Of the first four volumes, Out of the Ashes has the most well-rounded story, however. It touches on many aspects that are much more personal, including the spiritual, and questions of loyalty and honor. The beauty and horror of the few deaths in this fourth volume are as unforgettable and heartrending as the mass casualties in the first three volumes.
Out of the Ashes is nearly perfect, but it does still rely on way too much comic violence for my taste. I've complained about that before with this series, but frankly, I don't care for the every-other-page hitting for the sake of comedy. I understand it may be part of the style, but personally I find it detracts from the heart of the story.

La puntuación es más bien por toda la serie, más que por este volumen.
Última parte de las aventuras de Gen y su familia (en la más ámplia de las definiciones). Me da la impresión que este libro carga mucho más las tintas en lo de dar grandes discursos adoctrinadores sobre las maldades de la bomba atómica. También, a diferencia del volumen anterior, añade muchas escenas de peleas, y de hecho puede que cada seis páginas haya una.
Pero a pesar del exceso de peleas absurdas, violencia algo gratuita, melodrama, malvados de opereta, sentido del humor entre infantil e incomprensible por la brecha cultural y algún que otro momento narrativo increíble (porque es difícil creérselo), sigue siendo una historia muy entretenida y muy fácil de leer que te enseña mucho sobre lo que tuvieron que sufrir los supervivientes de Hiroshima.
Es un manga que critica tanto el uso de las armas atómicas, como la guerra, los abusos de los ocupantes americanos, así como las propias salvajadas que el ejército japonés hizo en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. A veces es un poco demasiado infantil e idealista, pero no por ello deja de tener su encanto como testimonio de un hecho terrible y una época muy dura.

Setelah Akira yang dijemput dari kuil, giliran Koji yang pulang dari medan perang. Lengkaplah keluarga Nanaoka yang tersisa berkumpul kembali. Sayang kemudian nasib Ryuta membawanya ke jalan yang berbeda. Demikian pula Tomoko yang di akhir kehidupannya malah sedikit membawa kebahagiaan pada orang-orang tertentu. Kedatangan tentara Amerika ke Tokyo, dan akhirnya Hiroshima, membuat penduduk ketakutan, namun perlahan-lahan keseimbangan kehidupan baru mulai berjalan.
Dua tahun setelah pengeboman, sekolah mulai dibuka. Tumbuhan Gandum mulai tumbuh, seperti juga rambut Gen mulai bermunculan di kepala pelontosnya.

Another good volume, it's interesting to see how the lives change and move on and adapt after the war.
