Better than I expected! I decided to read Verity after reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and while there definitely were many similarities, Verity also gladly had so much originality in it that I wouldn't call them the same. The mystery and suspense were rather well built, though the plot was overall very predictable and thus didn't manage to surprise me as much; it also relied too much on shock value when I would have preferred subtlety and reading between the lines.

I definitely prefer this book to Hoover's other books that focus more on the romance, though also in this one I hated the romance the most — I wouldn't call it unnecessary, but definitely unnecessarily detailed and too sex-focused, at least to my (dis)liking. Also are there any CoHo books that are not problematic at all? Just wondering, as Verity also very much lacked in the discussion and presence of consent and protection in sexual acts... also blaming women's clothes for men's uncontrollable arousal (and eventually rape) is soooo last century — could you please stop upkeeping rape culture, especially as a fellow woman?

if this is actually colleen hoovers best book she should not write again. it is so problematic and simply disgusting. maybe i’m missing the point but i really think that even if i am some how, it is because her writing was just that bad.

what was the point? that’s what i asked myself after every potential plot point was never discussed again. the sleep walking, the obsession from three separate characters, the “is the husband a creep”, the “is the child a psycho” and everything else that was mentioned once and never again.

the twist was decent but the reaction to it and what came of it ruined it. jeremy and lowen are terrible people throughout the entire book and not once was a rooting for them individually or as a couple. every single character needs therapy and i fully believe the the author does too. her exploitation of trauma is weird, the anti choice throughout the book is excessive and impossible to ignore.

honestly i could rant forever and i’ve missed a lot of points i wanted to make in this review but i’m sure there are better ones out there that can explain it more thoroughly than i can because i want to put my phone down and forget everything about this awful experience.

over all if felt like a waste of my time. i’ve read one other book by her and after reading them both i won’t be picking up another.
