As I started reading Horse, it soon became clear to me that I was reading a true novel. Too many of the other books I have read, have been lacking in the depth of research, the careful structure of prose, the weaving together of past and present.
It is a 6 star novel in my opinion and will remain one of my favorites.

It took me nearly 3 weeks to read this book, which is very telling. I really did want to love it, but I also just wanted to put it down. I almost quit reading it a couple times, and now I wish I had. The ending was terrible! I'm not a "it's gotta feel good for me to like it" kind of reader, but this ending was a bit much. The racism throughout the book felt contrived to me... written from the perspective of white people and not quite getting to the racist heart of the matter. I know I'm going against popular opinion with this review, but it's my experience.

DNF; did not like; seemed it was just trying to check off certain boxes.

The historical portion of the novel is compelling but the modern part is much less so. It feels rushed and like it's trying too hard. The inclusion of
Spoilerthe start of the pandemic on the plane
at the end seemed wholly irrelevant to the rest of the novel.
