This was, in theory, going to be a 5-star book, but the style just didn’t work for me. I love the idea of exploring temporary spaces and think the author had a lot of poignant things to say, but the writing style made it hard for me to not put it down.

I hate to DNF a book I’ve already purchased, but I simply refuse to keep reading this one.

Only two stars but I did like the conversation about Grenfell tower with the taxi driver near the end of the book.

Being able to write well and having interesting ideas is a good start for a book, but unfortunately, it’s not enough to be truly captivating. I’ll forget this book very quickly, even though some scenes (especially the ones where our protagonist talks to the working class) were quite interesting. I think the problem is that there’s nothing for me as a reader to hold on to. It’s just a lot of non-characters having interesting discussions about the modern world. But I can also get that from watching a video essay on YouTube.

The writing style was nice, and the idea of structuring the whole thing into three rooms was interesting in itself, but it didn’t lead anywhere. It’s often compared to Moshfegh or Cusk, but the difference, unfortunately, is that those two usually have very fascinating characters. Our protagonist has no real opinions, is easily swayed, and isn’t even characterized by her surroundings. It’s a pity. But maybe Hamya will write something with more substance in the future.”
