while the book features stuff that is very dated and very dumb stereotypes, as the author does step into the shoes of white women in the 1960s who had a very narrow worldview in Togetherville (the clumping of neighborhoods the astronaut families occupied in houston), this books gives an amazing insight into the wives of this otherworldly men we all learn about in school. it adds another layer to these men, but it was so much more interesting learning about the backbone of these families. the women became the unsung heroes of these families while their husbands were lauded as the true heroes (which is true, risking their lives to explore unknown realms to humankind). but it's these women and their competitiveness that slow grew to friendship that forged friendships that lasted lifetimes that made this such a touching biography to read.
