5 stars. quite possibly the book that made the biggest personal impact on me in undergrad (which seems both like just yesterday and so far away now!). Gatsby as a character is so uniquely disastrous, the herald of his own destruction and somehow an icon for aspirational characters everywhere. the story is a tragedy and i love the classic allusions to the American dream that Fitzgerald is known for, but as a simple story on its own Gatsby's tale is equally as devastating as the comparison to America and its progress as a whole. a timeless classic that i'll never get tired of rereading.

I’m not a big fan of classics so this book might not have been the best place to start. I found TGG, despite its small size, a chore to plough through and enjoy.

Fitzgerald certainly had a gift for descriptive and in-depth prose but this was part of the problem for me - a lot of the text is unnecessary and does very little in moving in the story forward.

Despite this I quite grew to like Nick the narrator, who seems to be the only rational and down to earth character of the group and proved himself as Gatsby’s only true friend.

My feelings about Gatsby wavered. On the one hand I could empathise with his hopeless romanticism, his rags to riches story and ultimate demise; then on the other I found him quite desperate and consumed by limerence and wanted someone to tell him to get over Daisy - but maybe that’s the point?

All in all this book wasn’t that bad but just wasn’t for me, old sport :)
