The story was a good reflective journey in finding oneself while wrestling with ones traumas.

Honestly kind of a bummer. This book reminded me of a series of unfortunate events, one shitty thing happening after another. It was also very slow paced, and I didn’t really like any of the characters. I did finish it, but I struggled. I absolutely loved Seraphina, I liked Shadow Scale less, and this one I did not like. I kept reading and hoped it would get better, but it didn’t. I’m disappointed to say the least, I see what the author was trying to do but ultimately I think it was a miss.

ALSO I’m so disappointed for Seraphina. Her life sucks.

I recommend reading Seraphina, and maybe shadow scale, but I would put this one back on the shelf.

I didn’t know until after I finished the book that there is a series before this that I should have read before. I try to go into blind when it comes to books so I don’t usually read a synopsis. I just check to make sure it was book 1 and then just start it.

Reading the Seraphina first might have made this a better experience but I can’t go back in time so I’ll just review it as it is to me.

The beginning was good. Middle was boring. Ending was great.

I did find that the character description and world building was not very detailed and for a book of this size I think it could have been.  And to be honest not much really happens for a 500 page book. This is definitely more character driven than plot which is fine but for the middle section of the book I was just bored and almost DNF’d.  I kept reading because I was intrigued by the concept of the serpent and wanted  to to know what happened.

I thought the ending was great. Enough so I’m going to read the second book. It is a bit shorter so hopefully will be able to keep my interest better than this one.
