I'm so happy to be able to say that I have read Wuthering Heights! I listened to the multi-cast audiobook that is available on YT, while also following along in the book, which was my first experience with the audiobook format. I don't regret having done this.

I'll leave some thoughts behind a spoiler tag.

SpoilerWhat's there to say about Wuthering Heights? Many people think Heathcliff is an antihero, a misunderstood person, but he isn't. He knows what he's doing, and he's hurting people all around him. He's an a$$hole, and it's okay to say that. These days we teach people that even if our childhoods were bad, you can make better choices and not take it out on those around you as an adult. Heathcliff had a choice and he could have done the same.

I have little sympathy for Catherine as well. How delusional was she that she thought she could both marry one person, and keep another man around as her bestie. So naïve, so narcissistic.

So toxic, the both of them together. So toxic, the both of them apart.

I felt a bit sorry for Linton, but he was such a whiner and a puppet that that feeling soon went away, and I didn't care for Young Cathy's stubbornness and rebellion either. In fact, during reading this novel, there were times when I wanted to smack people around. Or shake them. Or both.

After Linton died, after Heathcliff started changing toward the end, for those few merciful chapters, I read with such a feeling of relief. Finally, finally the dark days were over and it was time for something new, for hope to enter the story.

I was happy to see Hareton, while being a bit rough around the edges, was not beyond saving. Thankfully, Cathy asked Hareton to forgive her toward the end, so their love could blossom into something, and I shipped it, just like Nelly did. It was the only positive to come out of this very depressing, highly 'emotional' book.

In fact, it almost makes me want to update the rating of this book from a 2 star to a 3. I don't know yet if that sense of hope is enough to like the book over, for quite a few times I shook my head during reading this novel, not liking what I was seeing.

I applaud Emily Brontë for writing this story, for I could never, but I'm very unsure of the rating. I would like to cover buy this book, but I do not know if I ever want to read this toxic mess again, just to get to the not so bitter ending.

Ah, we'll see.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to read the classics, even just to say you read them. Know that this book is a toxic mess, the characters aren't likeable at all, and the moment someone without experience in life experiences a higher emotion, they get a fever or whatever, and they are 'going to die'. Or die. I don't understand how these people died.

Happy Reading!

Pure insanity. Repetitive drama and nonsense.

Brontë's writing is wonderful, but this story got old very quickly.
