A Big Hand for the Doctor by Eoin Colfer

This is definitely an Eoin Colfer book (it feels very Artemis Fowl-like), but it's not quite a first Doctor story. The Doctor is not really an action hero, he's more a grumpy old man. How does that work when the Doctor has no other person to take on the Action Hero role? I don't know. Still, the story wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. Just pretty much average.

This was my first book by Colfer and I enjoyed his fun and fast paced writing style. It made me curious about his popular works. Unfortunately, this book was missing some it factor. I was excited to see a homage to the first doctor but it was hard to even put his face on the character while reading. It didn't feel like the first doctor and barely felt like Doctor Who. I found several references to pop culture distracting. I will continue the series because they are short, sweet, and all different authors, but I hope they are better researched in the future.

I thought this was all good and fun, but it did not represent the first Doctor well. Still an enjoyable story regardless, but how do you mess up something that important?

Was entertaining in parts and didn't bore me but also felt a little like I was reading a children's book which I don't necessarily associate with Doctor Who. What really saved this short story was the reference to another classic story that had me really happy when I started noticing them. I'm not sure it really needed that bit at the end though to explain as I liked the subtly of it in the story instead.

3.5 stars. A fun little adventure. Lots of quippy one-liners to enjoy plus a little nod to J. M. Barrie at the very end, and that was cute.

This is a story about the first Doctor and his battle with the Soul Pirates - he loses his hand and takes the TARDIS 10 years into the future to have a rematch.
Nothing mind blowing here, just a good sci-fi story about the Doctor's adventures.

I have to admit that I've never seen a single episode with the First Doctor. However, that doesn't keep me from reading the novels and I actually liked this one more than I expected.
