I've delved into numerous Fitzek novels, often picking them up for a quick read in-between longer book series. The language is straightforward, yet the plot can be perplexing. It kicks off swiftly with 13-year-old Josy's vanishing and her desperate father's search. The narrative then oscillates between events before and after 'the pain.' Midway, the pace decelerates as the protagonist retreats to an island, but something feels amiss—awkward dialogues and out-of-place elements. However, the reasons become clear as the story progresses. The final third races through a barrage of twists. Eventually, I had an inkling of the ending, which turned out to be accurate. The conclusion attempts to inject a ray of hope into the somber tale, fitting the narrative well. I'd especially recommend the audiobook version; the voice actors, along with the music and sound effects, significantly enhance the experience.

I read it in one sitting! It flowed easily and kept interest even if in some points it could be a little confusing.

It was certainly interesting following Dr Viktor Larenz in his invastigation of his daughter's disappearance, but you have to pay attention.

Read it one sitting. Solid read, pretty gripping mystery, a good short page-turner to get you out of a reading slump. The big plot twist is relatively predictable but a lot of smaller ones did get me off guard! Lots of Shutter Island vibes.

This book completely gripped me from the beginning.  The only thing that stopped me from giving it a full five stars, is I guessed the twist at the 39% mark.  Normally that would completely knock down the rating, but it remained so tense and kept me on the edge of my seat either way.  The final twist I didn't see coming though.

Finished my next book by Fitzek and honestly I‘m not disappointed. Considering that this one was his debut novel is completely insane. Even his very first book was genius. This is such a good debut thriller with amazing plot twists that keep you on the edge all the way through. I really thought I had it all figured out but damn was I wrong.
This book is about Victor who‘s a psychiatrist whos daughter goes missing. That‘s all you should know before starting this one, because the less you know the better. Again I read the german version but there‘s also an english version of this book. So please if you like thrillers with plot twists than give this one a try. Now I need to decide which Fitzek book I‘m going to read next.
Trigger warnings: mental illness, animal death, animal cruelty, violence, child abuse and child death.
