I've delved into numerous Fitzek novels, often picking them up for a quick read in-between longer book series. The language is straightforward, yet the plot can be perplexing. It kicks off swiftly with 13-year-old Josy's vanishing and her desperate father's search. The narrative then oscillates between events before and after 'the pain.' Midway, the pace decelerates as the protagonist retreats to an island, but something feels amiss—awkward dialogues and out-of-place elements. However, the reasons become clear as the story progresses. The final third races through a barrage of twists. Eventually, I had an inkling of the ending, which turned out to be accurate. The conclusion attempts to inject a ray of hope into the somber tale, fitting the narrative well. I'd especially recommend the audiobook version; the voice actors, along with the music and sound effects, significantly enhance the experience.
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Mental illness, Violence, Grief, and Suicide attempt
Moderate: Child abuse, Drug abuse, and Drug use
