The kindergarten classes to whom I read this enjoyed it immensely. They immediately raised the question of whether or not the kids got back the same fish at the end. Some kids assumed they would get the same fish back. One student maintained that as there was no way to tell, she would never put her fish in the fountain. A sophisticated young listener said if you couldn’t tell, did it really matter what fish you got?

The pictures were utterly charming, especially the glimpse of old New York, done in grey tones. The scene with the hundreds of kids—all with fishbowls—was delightful, with vibrant color and detail.

I enjoyed the story even more after reading the author's note at the end and learning the origin of this story.
Love Leo Espinosa's illustrations!

So I spent my time worried about the transportation of the goldfish. Will they be harmed or get diseased? Will their vacation home be habitable? How will the correct fish be returned to their proper families? Oh yeah, and there is a true story to be had among all this fish tension, and it led me to do some research, NYC is full of cool treasures.

June 2018 - a sweet summer vacation story set in a big city. I was a little worried when I saw all the goldfish and that fountain, but I loved the way Lloyd-Jones handled it. Charming.

A TERRIBLE lesson on how to care for a goldfish (talk to your local pet expert before getting a pet, please!), but the adorable story about summer in the city paired with Espinosa's beautiful illustrations won me over regardless.
