“A humanoid robot is like any other machine; it can fluctuate between being a benefit and a hazard very rapidly.” (Rick Deckard, 40)
Positives
I feel like this book is meant to be read for the philosophy and world-building rather than the characters and plot. I was intrigued by the themes, like empathy, simulacra, religion, and scarcity. I was reminded a little of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 in regards to Deckard’s home situation and unfulfilled existence. There were also reminders of The Martian Chronicles for the relationship between Earth and Mars and humans and aliens/androids. However this wasn’t a purely positive thing.
Negatives
The themes were overwhelming and at times unresolved in the plot. I found the first chapter so absurd that I questioned if I wanted to keep reading. There were also some dated, icky descriptions of some characters that made me uncomfortable. The characters weren’t compelling to me at all, I was more interested in the situations they were in.

I'm so upset because the plot and writing style are both so good but the description of all the women and especially the scene with Rick & Rachel in bed is fuckin repulsive lmao
