It’s been years since I’ve read it, but reading it again reminded me how much this easily digestible book changed my perspective on editing and filmmaking.

this is one of those rare non-fiction books which gives the same satisfaction as reading good prose but also packs in so much tangible, useful information at such a pace that i'm sat there mouth open in shock going 'what the hell this is beautiful'. or maybe i'm just a nerd who can't resist hearing people talk about filmmaking

Completely invaluable and accessible. Loved every minute of reading this book. Lots of great insight into the introduction of The Avid and the switch over to digital from film.

Some of it so valuable. Murch just has a very saintly way of looking at the art of cinema. Some of it is dated, but not in a way that makes the book less valuable, it just with time has become something different, its become a voice from the past looking at the future, but its a future we have now. You read it as a document of an era much of the time. But the bones of it is timeless. If I had a critique is that those timeless sections I actually wanted a little bit more from Murch.

But its a great read. You can do it in a day. Just great for the soul

pretty good, though the second edition is really poorly edited (the irony!). maybe it was just the kindle version but the first half is ~20 micro chapters that are 6 pages long, and the entire second half is one massive chapter!

but anyway. walter is a huge fan of the ‘feeling’ of editing, and it was interesting reading his process and seeing what i do without thinking and other things i could try. he also just loves movies, and how could you not!

“The paradox of cinema is that it is most effective when it seems to fuse two contradictory elements— the general and the personal—into a kind of mass intimacy. The work itself is unchanging, aimed at an audience of millions, and yet—when it works—a film seems to speak to each member of the audience in a powerfully personal way.”
