The British are coming, the British are coming!!
I loved everything about this book! We have Elizabeth, who after suffering a tragic event has sworn off love forever. She has a certain set of rules that she has followed for the last few years. Enter Declan, who is dealing with his own issues. They are both attracted to each other but feel that they will be hurt in the end. We have a lot of back and forth, will they or won't they and I enjoyed every minute of the story! When they get together you can feel the attraction and also feel them fighting the connection. The character development was good and I like how the author took the time to develop their relationship.

"She was my queen and I wanted to be her king. I wanted to sit at the throne of her body and love her forever."

When the past comes back to haunt Elizabeth, Declan wasted no time protecting his woman. He gave her the strength, security and confidence she needed to face her demons head on!! Elizabeth had given Declan love and support that he needed as well. I loved seeing two broken people come together and complete each other! They both had issues and made the changes to be with one another and they also accepted each other's faults as well. This is what love and being in relationship is all about!! Compromise. Acceptance. Support. Understanding.

"I want to visit my mum’s grave with you and tell her how I found the perfectly broken girl to fall in love with."

Declan, has a twin brother Dax. I LOVED Dax in this story, there's definitely more to this "sex god" and I can't wait to read his book! Shelley, Elizabeth's best friend was also another character I enjoyed and I hope we see more of her in the next book. This was my first time reading this author and she has a new fan!! Bring on Filthy English!!

I listened to the audiobook and I am glad that I did because the voices were great and they did a great job telling both person's stories (especially Declan's because the accent was hot af!)

Elizabeth Bennett, who shares the name of the heroine from her favorite book, Pride and Prejudice, was attacked by her boyfriend on prom night two years ago. And, while she claims she is doing okay, that night still haunts her. She cannot get really close to men anymore so she has one night stands with average men of her choosing in a place where she feels safe. That is her way of feeling like she is back in control of something in her life again. While in college, she meets Declan Blay, a sexy Brit with tattoos. She is drawn to him and he is drawn to her. But Declan is just coming out of a relationship with Nadia whom he caught sleeping with another man, so while he is over her, isn't quite ready to dive into something yet.
But, when Elizabeth discovers that her new neighbor, who reads the classics (like her beloved Pride and Prejudice) is none other than Declan, they have a hard time staying away from each other. She hates violence and he is a fighter for money. She cannot let herself get close to another man and allow him to hurt her again, but Declan makes it harder to stick to her guns. This was a sweet story, while still being somewhat predictable. All in all, it was very enjoyable, with very well rounded supporting characters. I look forward to reading the next book about Declan's twin brother Dax Blay, the cocky and arrogant, but un-tattooed Brit who is a fun-loving frat brother, who is secretly looking for love.

Dirty English is dark and gritty, beautiful and hopeful, and has some very interesting and complex characters. I have to admit I cried, because Elizabeth had truly been through hell, but then, so had Declan - even if that was a different kind of hell.

Review - (un)Conventional Bookviews

From the beginning of Dirty English, I knew I was going to enjoy this story! The prologue made me cry - Elizabeth's hell was very personal, and also something that was shared against her will with several people. However, once the first chapter opened, and she was in college, moving in to her new apartment, next to a guy who had old classics in a box by his door, I just knew it was my kind of story. And Declan... yeah, talk about hot guy! A fighter, an English major, smart, good-looking, tender-hearted and strong-bodied. What's not to like, right?

Dirty English is written in dual point of view, with some chapters from Elizabeth's perspective, others from Declan's, and I really got to know both of them very well. Strong personalities, which they needed, and also loyal and loving - when they opened up, which didn't happen often at all.

The character development for both of the main characters was great, because they both had a lot of crap in their past that they had to let go of, but that can be so very scary. However, especially Elizabeth realized that as long as she let the past dictate her present and her future, she wouldn't really have a life at all, she'd only have an existence, and she knew she both needed and deserved more than that.

The only negative note I have about Dirty English is that there are sex-scenes without condoms... and that's just a big no-no in my opinion! Using a condom is not something you just forget! That's like forgetting to go to the bathroom when you need to pee. And nobody should trust someone they're just starting to get to know when it comes to their health and past sex-life. The story is very emotional, but the characters were so realistic, and the main storyline really spoke to me, and I loved how Elizabeth and Declan dealt with the things they needed to deal with. And I loved how Declan's British accent came out in his dialogues ;)

Fave Quotes - (un)Conventional Bookviews

As far as I knew, Nadia was still with her new guy, some fancy tennis player form Brazil. Donatello or Michelangelo or something. Ninja Turtle? Yeah.

Elizabeth Bennett was the most awkward person to ever come to a frat party. Not only had she came through the door like she was going to an execution, but she'd asked me to shag her in the most unsophisticated manner I'd ever seen in my days at Whitman.

She debated for a few seconds, a small smile curving her mouth. Full and plump, those lips on mine had been my fantasy way too many nights. "Okay, but only if you let me take you down a few times. Like flip you over my shoulder, toss you to the ground kind of take down. Maybe sit on you."
I exhaled, picturing that little scenario, and I couldn't stop the little grin on my face. "You can sit on me whenever you want."

British fighter in touch with his emotions... this ticked all the boxes for book boyfriend material.

After skimming over the mushy and longwinded profession of love, the copious amounts of Pride and Prejudice references, and beautiful disaster-esque vibes it wasn't bad.

Typical college girl ( Elizabeth Bennet) meets college boy (Declan Blay) at a party and its lust at first sight. Although our main girl has some bones in the back of her closet that she isn't too keen on letting anybody see, Declan charms his way into her life as a friend and then more. He lets her see that she can open up, lose control and still be okay.. still be safe.

Not a great read but good enough.

My Goodreads challenge addiction will be the death of me. Currently I need to read books featuring heroes who are boxers or professional fighters. It's becoming obvious it's not my cup of tea. I am not excited by violent people and big muscles...
But if we put that aside, Dirty English was the best in the bunch of the books I have read so far for this challenge. Sure there are new adult cliches raining left and right, but we also have:
+ College setting where characters actually have to study
+ MCs don't just jump into bed
+ Hero is a bookworm

BLOODY HELL (that’s what Brit say, right?) this book was a surprise discovery for me- I was new to this author, and I really enjoyed this read. So many things my anglophile heart adores-tattooed British fighter saves (in more way than one) beautiful, vulnerable neighbor based on PRIDE AND PREJUDICE? Get out of my head, ILSA!

But seriously, this book is sweet and steamy read, about survival and connection and the liberating power that loving someone else has on you- and how it helps you see yourself.

Our heroine is Elizabeth, who is coping in destructive ways as the result of past traumas. She’s struggling with the ghosts of her history but she’s resilient and determined - strong and smart. She’s created order in her life to cope with the disorder of her trauma. She’s the perfect dichotomy- affecting strength on the outside but breaking on the inside.

Her path crosses with her neighbor, our delicious British underground street fighter, Declan- who, too, has been broken from his past and is using a different vice to cope- fighting. He steps in at a key moment for Elizabeth, and turns our carefully ordered rules on their head. He’s a swoony book boyfriend- he doesn't’ give up on our heroine, he breaks down her walls,he shows up for her when she needs it, and their connection is as emotional as physical…..but he also DELIVERS in the bedroom steamy.

The story moves quickly, we have dual POV, and the chemistry sparks- that same delicious pull you feel between Elizabeth and Darcy in P and P you feel here- that inexplicable draw.

If you, like me, love a good Brit alpha and like an angsty, steamy storyline with a surviving heroine whose romantic journey helps catalyze her healing, then this is for you.
