Somehow I think isobel deserves better but also I’m happy they are together. Idk man confusing he’s so mean but also love them together

I'm addicted to these now I swear. I've read marriage of convenience type books before but this one was slightly different with the husband quite literally abandoning his wife for some years and then her taking it into her own hands to drag him back. The women in this book are so fearless and Isobel is definitely not a damsel in distress. She's such a badass, and loves to prove her incorrigible husband, Winter, wrong. I honestly have no other words other than I loved this book, didn't want to put it down, and will probably now recover from the lack of sleep reading this thing.

The Marquess of Roth could be a statue carved from marble instead of flesh and bone. Starkly beautiful. Impenetrable. Impossible to read. Her husband.

4.5 Lady Darcy stars!

Amalie Howard, where the hell have you been my entire life?! I cannot believe that this is the first book I've read by Amalie as I absolutely adored her writing style; it was so effortless and perfectly balanced in dialogue and character growth. I loved every single word of her novel, and I could not read fast enough even though work this week made it hard to devour as quickly as I would have liked.

However as much as I loved this story, I do have one minor hang-up which caused me to drop 1/2 a star. I really wanted Winter to grovel more and have this grand moment of "I'm such a bastard and a blathering fool and I would be nothing without you and I'm so sorry, please forgive me and I'll spend the rest of my angst-riddled days making it up to you." Even though we hear his guilt and remorse, I felt he wasn't as contrite towards Isobel after he majorly fucks up multiple times and just wish he would have given her the epic grovel she deserves after putting up with his nonsense.

Nevertheless, there were so many aspects of this amazing story that I loved. I loved Winter's constant swearing; his sailor mouth definitely felt in sync with my own! The side characters were just as lovable as Winter and Isobel; I found myself rooting for Oliver and Clarissa almost more than I was for Winobel and cheering whenever Clarissa sampled Oliver's tea... **wink, wink** There was just enough OW drama, angsty thoughts of unworthiness from our hero, danger and excitement with guns and swordfights, and plenty of scenes of our heroine taking the reins and showing our hero what a dumbass he really is (lovingly, of course). I will definitely be reading more of Amalie Howard's books, beginning with THE BEAST OF BESWICK, and look forward to more from her! ♡

3 stars. I started and stopped this several times because life kept getting in the way. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book but lost patience for Roth’s inability to let himself be happy.

I actually liked this better than The Beast of Beswick. This was a fun story of a husband and wife who needed to get to know one another. The side characters were fun and it is always interesting to see characters (Roth) see their beliefs and truths pulled out from under them. Strong heroine who was smart and went after what she wanted.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, and I didn't want to continue after nearly 50% of this one. The relationship was comprised purely of insta-lust every time the couple are in the vicinity of each other. The MMC's conflict was just - stupid. I didn't really buy it. The scenes between them can be awkward - a passionate kiss and some internal monologue, and then dialogue from the MMC is suddenly cruel (typical "I must drive her away because of my torment" which annoys me - I've read that enough). And girl, have a little backbone. He leaves you for three years to molder on a country estate and you want him back? Eff him.

Enjoyed this second book more than I did the first book. Will read more from this author.

When I read the marriage in crisis trope I was hitting that request button, but alas it was for not. The hero in this is REALLY unlikable. He's like dirty mop water to the heroine's clean floors. Basically why it took me two days to read this book was because of him. Heroine on the other hand, is all that and bag of chips. I could read Clarissa and her all day long. The epilogue for this did save it for me though.
Trigger Warnings: loss of loved ones, mentions of overdosing, mentions of cheating(not between the H&h), violence, and gun shot

I think this is what always happens with period romances like this - I am into it at the start, I enjoy the premise and the setup, and then lose interest and it's a drag to try to finish. The dramatic things they come up with to prevent them from being together grow tiresome, but I guess it's the only way you can get to the page count, I guess.

They describe the book as a young, naïve wife become a tigress and winning back her husband, but she seemed pretty much as naïve as ever. Honestly, when someone rejects you that many times, I feel like you should give up. Give up and move on. He's a jerk and treating you terribly, don't put up with that.

And some of the language - "her soft to his hard; demanding entry; etc. etc." can all be so overdone. But I suppose there's a demand for that, and it's just not for me.
