“My memory only lasts 80 minutes”.

A housekeeper, and her son become a chosen family for a professor who sees the world in numbers. This is a touching short story about protection, friendship, and celebrating staying present.

This book is a complete masterpiece. With lively and very lovable characters, beautiful writing and a warm atmosphere, this is a heartwarming tale on found family that really captures the best parts of the trope. An utterly flawless book about the beauty of math and love, without the romance. The growth of the characters is subtle and realistic. The prose is fresh and full of clarity with a distinct Japanese flair. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. If you want a comfort read, this is your go to. If you want vibes and no plot, this is your go to.

This was such a sweet and unique story, and of course, I loved all the mathematics theories and references throughout the book!

This is only a short book but it does an excellent job of painting a vivid picture of the professor and his cottage. I could really envisage him as a person, and this only strengthens as we piece together his life and personality through his interactions with the housekeeper and her son. The professor is presented as such an interesting character, and whilst we don't get to learn a lot about him and his life, the air of mystery and intrigue keeps you wondering about his life and his inner thoughts. Similarly, although we don't learn a whole lot about the housekeeper, the book does a great job of showing her characteristics throughout the book and building up a good picture of who she is as a person and what's important to her.

The friendship between the housekeeper and her son and the professor is especially heart-warming, and although the professor cannot remember any of their interactions, you get a sense that this kindness and companionship is positively impacting the professor as he appears to come out of his shell a bit more when they're around. Similarly, the housekeeper starts to notice the beauty in numbers after working for the professor, taking the initiative to learn about equations and noticing prime numbers in everyday life. It's a wonderful depiction of how much a person can change your life or have a positive impact on your life through seemingly small and benign ways.

And of course, I loved all the maths throughout the story. There is a lot of discussion about numbers and theorems and this book definitely re-sparked my loved of maths!

Overall, this is a lovely character-focused story about kindness, chosen family, and the beauty of mathematics.

What I love most about this book is that it shows how much empathy and compassion one can hold for another person. The housekeeper was kind, patient and understanding toward the professor despite his condition where he couldn't retain memories for long, forgetting all the time they shared with each other. It's a beautiful story that touches the heart and the mind.

Este libro hizo que la matemática me parezca hermosa y eso debería hablar por sí mismo.
Es un relato simple y súper dulce, con todos los condimentos clásicos de una historia sobre amistades inesperadas. Directo al cora.
