This low-fantasy magical realism book follows Jared as he navigates the challenges of colonialism, high school, an abusive family, and hallucinations that may or may not be magic.

Although I appreciated the coming-of-age aspect of this book, I found that the fantasy storyline was more on the sideline than I would have liked. One of my biggest criticisms of the writing is that the drug use and violence/weapons reads like it was written by a mom who has never smoked weed before. No hate to the author, but some of the slang that was used was laughable.

I really liked this book. Jared has a hard life and there are points he feels helpless but he is always trying to do something about it. The way he's always trying to take care of everyone resonated with me. He makes bad choices but is also prepared to live with those choices. The magical aspect was a bit surprising and I wanted a second book with a bit more explanation for this and to see where things would go, but this book is self contained and doesn't need anything else. I will be picking up more by this author.

i went in expecting to enjoy this, but am still shocked at just HOW much i enjoyed it. i loved this. i love love loved it. i did only listen to this via audiobook, but the narrator, jason ryll, was an absolute delight. this book had me cracking up the whole time and i couldn't help but love jared and his messy ass self and family
