I read the Hilary Tamar novels when they first came out and had forgotten how much fun they were.

Kind of uneventful. Multiple times I would realize after listening for a while that I had no idea if anything had really happened. It felt very mellow and like one of the more modern mysteries where everyone is living in a retirement village, even tho I don’t think that’s the case.

This Was Adonis Murdered is an odd little murder mystery from the early 80s. It features several interesting young lawyers and a professor who does the actual detective/deductive work.   It also, oddly enough, features much discussion of gay and/or sapphic relationships, which is frankly amazing for the year it was written.

The whole piece is a clever bit of writing and a fun murder mystery. The English language is peacocked about, but in a rather fun way. I did find that the mystery held and was good. I wish we had rather got to see Julia interact with her peers rather than being separated from them by a trip. The real thrill of this novel is not the murder but Julia, Ragwort, and Cantrip doing things.

I heartily recommend this book to mystery lovers and to the lovers of "25 cent" words as my old English teacher would describe them.

It took me a bit to like this, due to the writing style. I doubt I'll read another in the series.

This is very very funny and very very good. Just the thing for a sardonic British murder mystery, if you like that sort of thing.

My favorite line (which was, honestly, part of a hilarious conversation, but I'm not going to put the whole thing here):

"The whole object of an Oxford education is to ensure that when you want to know someone you know someone who knows them."

Also, Desdemona, "No names, no pack drill", all the lawyers, and all the tax code! So awesome!
