It took me a good while to get used to Violet as a narrator as her self-deprecating and lustful thoughts honestly were a bit too repetitive. Some lines took me straight out of the story by how silly they sounded and early on I considered not finishing. However, I’m glad I got used to it and kept reading because the world is fascinating. It got much more entertaining when dragons took on a more active role. The overall story with its different conflicts and discoveries throughout are exciting and engaging and kept me reading through to the end.

Fourth Wing is the wildly entertaining New Adult fantasy romance from Rebecca Yarros, and the first in her Emyrean series.

The first third was great. I was super interested in the world, the characters, and the plot being built. That all fell apart in the second third when we took a break from doing any actual plot/worldbuilding and tossed in a bunch of smut and insta-love. Back into some plot for the final third but it was incredibly irritating to watch the over the top instalove romance and the now over-powered protagonist.

Basically a bunch of popular YA tropes with dragons tossed in for vibes. Probably good for people who like Sarah J Maas or Twilight but otherwise, not worth the read.

This was an excellent book! It definitely had a some YA vibes to it, but I don't know if that is where I would place it since the characters were older. I liked the characters a lot. I liked that Violet was not the typical YA heroine that just comes into the story super strong and invincible, though she does get better at an astonishing speed. While there were plenty of twists and turns that I suspected, there were also a good number of surprises - the balance was good for me in regards to the foreshadowing. Overall I liked it a lot, and I'm glad I finished it just in time to read the second book!
