The inadequate Heir- 3⭐️ 3🌶️

An Endless War. A Forbidden Love.

A soldier raised as heir to an empire, Zarrah is motivated by two truths. The first is that the Veliant family murdered her mother. And the second is that her pursuit of vengeance will put every last one of them in their graves.

The Endless War between Maridrina and Valcotta has raged for generations, leaving thousands of Zarrah’s people dead and countless more orphaned. So when she’s given command of the contested city of Nerastis, Zarrah is prepared to do whatever it takes to destroy the Maridrinian forces who oppose her. And to kill the Veliant prince who leads them.

Yet a chance encounter with an anonymous, and handsome, Maridrinian causes Zarrah to question whether the violence she’s perpetrated is justice or a crime. And as she continues to meet the nameless man each night, she finds common ground—and fiery passion–in his arms.

But when identities are revealed, Zarrah must decide whether to embrace a chance at peace… or march to the drums of war

✨My Opinion✨
This story overlaps with book 2, just from a different set of POV’s. I didn’t really like rehashing an old story. It didn’t feel as well flushed out as the second book did… even with the reused dialogue. Maybe because I already knew the outcome, the steaks didn’t feel as high. I’m glad that book 4 will be new content… but I’m guessing now that a 3rd couple will be introduced and their story will overlap what has already happened. Maybe Aren’s sister and her arranged marriage? It’s a lot of the same plot to have 6 books focus

The thing I loved about The Bridge Kingdom and The Traitor Queen was the balance between the plot and the romance. I felt like The Inadequate Heir focused a bit more on the romance than I would have liked that the plot felt kind of... flat. While reading, I found myself constantly getting distracted. I wasn't properly invested in the characters or the plot.

Zarrah and Keris were pretty average, to be honest. Zarrah was described as a well known warrior/ general but not much of her skills was being displayed. Same with Keris, he was said to be really clever but not much of his wit was being showcased. Their relationship was not really believable nor memorable, to me. They were constantly mentioning their desire for each other to the point that it felt more like lust rather than love– not that there's anything wrong with lust but I would have preferred more of an emotional connection first. (There was a spicy scene that took place through a window and I was a bit put off by it, to be honest.)

The plot at least was enjoyable to read about, mostly because this book took place right at the end of The Bridge Kingdom and spanned throughout the timeline of The Traitor Queen. Seeing glimpses of Aren and Lara was super fun. They stole the show even when they were not the main characters. Other than that, since we already knew what happened, I wasn't really surprised or shocked by certain revelations.

I was contemplating whether to continue on with the series but the last 3 chapters of the book was pretty interesting, so I guess l'll give the next one a chance.

SpoilerWhere do I even begin? I really wanted this book to be MIND BLOWING. Like so good I couldn’t think about anything else for weeks and weeks. But it was not, it was… a bad combination of slow and boring + a recycled overarching plot line we’d already seen in TTQ. Why authors insist on ruining GOOD characters + plot for a series that will undeniably bring them $$$ will always be a mystery to me.

Besides the grievances I have with the plot, the characters were… not good. Keris seemed preoccupied with sex, in moments it was not appropriate for him to be, and Zara was such an unlikable character I refuse to believe this book was actually about a general who was so useless she wasn’t missed by her people.

I love Danielle and have been a TBK stan since almost day one. This was not how you carry on a series that is so beloved though. Keris is hot as fuck but the HELL is he doing with Zara? Keris is smart and it just seemed stupid he’d be with such a naive girl.

I realize that this presumption of naivety is Danielle’s fault and probably not what she was hoping to convey.

I was gutted when I realized this was not a book I could speed through and just ESCAPE. It was a drag and its been sitting here for months waiting for me to finish it.

I DNF’d it tonight at 75%.

I’m pretty heartbroken.

2⭐️ and I don’t recommend this book. I will not be continuing the series, but listening to Lara and Aren on a loop for 24 hours to cleanse this book from my BRAIN.

I’m not sure if I’m cancelling my preorder of the hardcover. It’s a beautiful hardcover but I don’t think I can justify spending 30$ on a book I dont like 😭
