An enjoyable read that is almost perfect...
I was drawn to this book by the blurb and great setup for a story. Part way through I twigged this was the second volume in a trilogy; but in truth, you don't need to have read the first book for this one to make sense.
The strength of this book are the characters, vivid setting, and sense of dilemma...which peters out later due to odd responses to certain situations. Indeed, what takes the story a small step back from perfection are implausible decisions Amara makes, and an obvious setup for a third book. There was also a constant harking back to a character that died in #1, which begins to get tedious. On the plus side, I loved how the 'hero' characters had flaws and that the story didn't always go in the expected direction. The minuses were that major fears in the first half, simply became less worrying in the second! Still, I am being picky and this is a recommended read - if the blurb appeals to you, I'm sure you will enjoy this book.
