An interesting novel that explores a Latin American dictatorship from many different angles - though always through those who have direct contact with the governmental/military apparatus rather than everyday citizens. Somehow everything feels very calculated, despite the horrors of the torture and the sadism of Trujillo. It's only Urania, who is a bit of a glorified framing device, that comes across as warmly human behind her icy exterior.

Falls apart tension-wise once Trujillo is assassinated, even if there is much to discuss regarding the consequences of said assassination, but, regardless, Llosa's novel moves at a breakneck pace while handling so much, both fictive and not, that it's quite remarkable for most of these pages (even though this could 100% be shorter). Wild dictators make for insane plot points.
