Cork is on the run from professional hitmen. He decides to hide out at his estranged cousin Jewell's house. While there, a young teenage girl ends up dead and her body is discovered in the river. His PI friend from the last book shows up to not only help protect Cork, but also solve the mystery of the dead girl. I really enjoyed this book and plan to continue to listen to this series. I think the narrator is getting better too.

Another great book in the world of Cork O’Conner. There were a couple things that annoyed me that I won’t spoil, but overall, another extremely well written novel. Love this series so much!

Audiobook
This is a hard one for me to rate. The story itself I thought was one of the better ones in the series. It introduces a whole new cast of characters that I enjoyed, and I like how the story focused more on them than on Cork.

However...there were some real "men writing women" vibes going on. There's always been some of that in this series, but it seemed extra bad in this one. When describing a girl in her early teens, he focused on describing her breasts (or lack thereof). A woman at one point talks about a 15 y.o. runaway and said she hadn't had a period yet? (Why would she randomly bring that up?) Idk - I listened to the audio so I don't have exact quotes, but there were just a bunch of cringy parts.

"...every falling leaf comes to rest where it was always meant to."

"In the absence of wind, the grass still trembles."

--I've really enjoyed this mystery series! Very different setting. Excellent writing. Local author!

Glad not to have another cliff hanger. Crime was pretty heinous.
