Compelling, at times disturbing, but ultimately rewarding, story of the destructive and indiscriminate horror of war and man's resulting inhumanity to man (and beast). How does a man become a soldier when his entire being rebels against killing; how does he hold on to compassion and empathy when surrounded by the madness of violence; and what price will he pay for both? The book is written in an almost cinematic style, with sparse but evocative language; Findley does not need a thousand words to paint a vivid picture.
