I am reading this as the first book Iām the series, even though a lot of people say you can read it third.Ā
I liked her relationship with Nehemia a lot and love the female friendship angle. I feel that a lot of the relationships between champions could have been built up more, especially hers with Nox.
Chaol and Celaena probably had my favorite dynamic in the book, and I like them together more than her and Dorian even though heās kind of the main love interest. Itās giving ālove triangleā for most of the book so Iām excited to see where it goes.Ā
Great world building so far and Iām interested to see more of it as she fights for her freedom.

Honestly, I donāt think Sarah J Maas is an incredible writer (and particularly in this first book! There were so many exclamation marks!) but the confidence she has in her stories is addictive. It is so easy to be swept away with her worlds, and there were a few really enjoyable developments in this first book that I didnāt see coming and some great characters.Ā
As always she does an excellent job of balancing developing the romance elements with developing friendships, and having bigger goals beyond love. And I loved the mystery element in this! It was intriguing and helped lead into the more magical elements of this story really well.Ā
This was a good start to the series but I have high hopes it will get better from here. Itās hard to avoid all the Throne of Glass references on Instagram so I feel like I still have many characters to meet and places to go, and Iām excited to start the next one.
