Ugh, once again I went in hoping this would be the one that turned the series around for me and would get to the good stuff. You would think that would happen with the second (technically fourth if you wanna get nitty gritty about it) book in the series, right? You would be wrong!

Like most everyone who picked up this series, I was expecting badass Geralt and monsters and cool fantasy lore. Not the same conversation happening over and over again with different characters who have no true stake in the series as a whole. The pacing was the worst, as seems to be the case with Sapkowski's novels. Don't get me wrong, I love a good court politic arc, but I love it when it goes somewhere. And before the ending of the book, thank you.

Somehow, I found myself enjoying Ciri's scenes the best. Despite some icky stuff that happens that I tried to rush through reading, I felt like her character was the only one that had any sort of development in the grand scheme of things.

If I read the word contempt one more time I will lose it I think. I had to google the actual definition at some point, just to make sure we were all on the same page about what we were trying to convey here.

Unfortunately, me being me, I'll probably continue to read the rest of the series, since I have all the books physically. Maybe at some point Geralt will decide to remember who he is insteady of this mopey guy he's letting himself become. Someone needs to talk some sense into him, i.e. Dandelion.

Still really enjoy the characters and the world here for sure. The plot and the pacing of these books is so strange though and I feel like the only reason it's not driving me nuts is that I know so many parts of the story already. If I didn't, surely it would have pissed me off that this book yanked us between Ciri and Geralt with no apparent goal in sight. I suppose this story was about Emihr attempting to find Ciri? But essentially nothing gets answered or resolved with that plot, or the sorcerers' conclave, or Brokilon or anything. And then we get an entire introduction to six new characters in the final pages, which is insane.

**mild spoilers, you've been warned**

yeah uh... the next book better explain what the hell all of that was, because you can't just have an entire war progress and have it covered in a chapter via dialogue

but otherwise, i enjoyed myself and i'm really looking forward to the next book. lots of fun yennefer & geralt moments in this book, and a lot of political navigation & trying to finally get to ciri's role in everything. that being said, i didn't appreciate the aforementioned chapter where an entire progression of the war was glossed over in a dialogue and would have rather have read about that for another 100 pages than be left with the bare minimum information to go off of (and even then, it didn't even seem that relevant to the rest of the book?)

Not as good as the first book in the series…took this book as more of a world-building backdrop read, not much character development or plot development until the last 60 pages or so.

my heart wants to give this 5 stars, but realistically i know it doesn't compare to my other 5 stars. very politically dense, and I'm not convinced i understood everything so i will be googling things after this lol
