I read this about 20 years ago and later found out it was an abridged version. I can't really see what you would remove though on a second reading, I enjoyed every page.

5/5 || This book was just *chef's kiss*

I truly loved the character's arc of Jane. I really enjoyed watching her become an independent, nice, self-less, caring person.
I was not expecting that end, I thought she was going to stay with Diana and Mary in Moor House, but I am so not disappointed with the way it finished. They finally got married and she kept in contact with her cousins.

Nooo, Jane, no! You're way to young to go back to that one "ugly" employer guy twenty years your senior and be his nurse.
Also: fuck Mr. St John!

dark, gothic, one of my favourite narrative voices, perfect for gloomy rainy days in autumn

lowkey was worried when I flicked to the end and glanced at the line "I married him", when I was still actually reading about St John ahahah
but anyways I like that Jane possesses such a strong moral compass and sense of self respect, it was enjoyable to read of her experiences. Justice for Grace Poole though honestly like cmon
