Ever since My Ex From Hell, Tellulah Darling has been one of my must read authors. So when I got the chance to read her latest book, you bet I jumped on that!

Her newest book, Kissed Off, follows an age old war between two families- the Mori's and the Markows - over a ruby. A ruby that's been lost and clues to its whereabouts left behind for their families to find. 16 year old Reiko Mori has taken up the mantle and has vowed to find the ruby before the Markows. There's just one thing - she's still a teenager in high school dealing with teenage things, aka tests, crushes, the usual. And things start to look good for Reiko. She found the last clue, her crush is her English project partner - I mean, that right there is high school gold. That is until she finds out her crush is a member of the Markow family

Dun dun dunnnnnnnn

The two of them decide to pair up and jet across the world to solve the mystery of the ruby themselves. Thus finding themselves chased by a mystery man, kidnapped, and just plain confused. Who knew mystery's could be so hard?

I really enjoyed this book. It had the snark and sass that I've come to love from Darling, along with a mystery that I wanted to solve. And I loved Reiko and Levi. There's murder, revenge, love, betrayal - I mean, this book pretty much hits every point (including Buffy references FTW!). I only wish this was series so that I could have more of these characters in my life!

Kissed Off by Tellulah Darling is a cross up of Romeo & Juliet and a treasure hunt. Part of me wants to compare this story to something adventurous like Indiana Jones, but things aren't THAT exciting. Besides, it's two teenagers coming together to try to learn the truth as to why their families have been on the hunt for these specific jewels and pieces all their lives, passing this quest down from generation to generation.
The beginning is captivating. You learn a bit about the characters and their history. Reiko is a character that I immediately like from the beginning. I love her chameleon abilities when it comes to her quest, but then in school, she's shy and reserved. I can't help but get a kick out of it and her crush on Levi. These characters are very much average teenagers at the end of the day. I can't help but be amused by the way that they plot to sneak away so that their parents don't know what exactly it is that they are up to. Reiko is looking to be acknowledged by her mother and Levi is just looking for some adventure. At the end of the day though they are both on a quest to discover the truth behind the generations-long feud between their families.
I enjoyed this book overall from start to finish. The characters are flawed but for the most part in a fun way. Levi proves to be a typical male in a couple situations. While this makes me roll my eyes it causes the story to be more believable. I appreciate the suspense that the author weaves in as there is a third party after the jewels as well. This helps to keep the story interesting when the two sides are working together and...of course, falling in love.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I really enjoyed this fun YA novel and the characters in it. It has a couple of cheesy moments, but nothing too cringe-worthy.
