a refreshing and very intriguing take on the tragic history. a hilarious one, i might say (massive emphasis)))), but did not feel like to discredit the important weight of the actually tragedy.

  • i kept getting amazed at how the three authors geniusly weaved the plot: to put some new takes but still sync them to the actual history like
how edward was still not a king even though he didnt die. instead he stepped down his throne even after conquering it back from mary and named bess as the next reign
  • when i said funny, it WAS FUNNY. HILARIOUS. PEAK COMEDY. SUCH COMEDY FOUNDER (no, hyperbole) but you get the idea right. the banter, the narration all full of entertainment i was soooo contented i forgot when was the last time i had so much fun reading a book.
  • and the three POVs part? also clever. i enjoyed the three POVs so much and most of the time found myself eagerly getting excited to read the next chapter to see the other perspective. and the order of the POVs was so consistent but never break the plot and they were just very complementing to each other. you know, it was also satisfying to find out the true reason why a certain character behaved so annoyingly in the previous chapter cause no worries! NOW it's his/her perspective. and also it showed that equally-shared portion of the three main characters arc (although jane and g were an ounce above edward), everyone got their development though it might not appear THAT DEEP but its still okay for me.

jane grey.
our leading lady was a bookworm and WHO doesnt like a bookworm main character? she and her bibliophile-self were sooo relatable!

also, sorry to break it up to you, if you're in the same batalyon as me where we put the strict rules to enemies-to-lovers (they have to be REAL enemies!!): jane-gifford were not enemies to lovers! idk why people put that label on them though.....their marriage was forced so it's understandable that they started their relationship with grunge i guess

gifford dudley.

the part where we expected to see gifford's true desire was rather um....how should i say it..... i actually expected that it would somehow relate to his poet poetician poeticism self cause that's what he's been hiding from people and yeah he needed to fully embrace his nature, right? instead we got the similar love-realization-oh-i-cant-live-without-jane-i-just-realized-im-stupid-idiot moment which already appeared before when jane got hurt LIKE MAN buckle up you slow-witted but yeah the freedom part actually was important too bUTTTTT the poet arc deserved bettah >>

out of context a bit, and i actually havent seen the series yet but why they changed it to guildford? like its not any better tbh

also, i must admit i was lowkey disappointed at how the gifford-the-poet arc went in the end. he worked so hard to hid it (which actually was confusing for me cause what was sooo wrong about being a poet and poem-reading? was it a shame in that era?), even willingly to lie to jane and admitted a scandalous cover instead  —so i expected a twist response to it when he revealed it, you know like: OOOOH it wasnt embarassing! i MEAN, jane was a bookworm and should not she get excited when her husband was a poet? but the reaction was less chaotic and more mundane than what i expected.

edward tudor.
our boy king. actually its kinda hard to write something about him given the short life he had in the actual event
i feel like its so hAAARD to write cause he was supposed to be dead but here in the alternate universe, he recovered from the poison and later would live happily ever after. so its better to put that spoiler tags for the following rants. SOOO.... actually i kinda came here because of jane and gifford, while edward was you know...he's dying so i should put more focus on the other two....right? but his character was growing on me while the story progressed. he came from a spoiled little boy king then got dragged to strive for life, then when life was conducive enough, he tried to be the king as he thought he should only to realize that aint him. i think that was a beautiful development. but aside from that, he wasnt so bad but i just despiseddd his obsession to kissing gracie WHEN they just only been together for a few days? i mEAN DUDE i know youre a hopeless romantic one but its getting daft cause youre dying DYING? youre in a stray condition? youre so far away from the kingdom, so isolated in some forest, not knowing where youre alive tomorrow?

Very good YA rewrite of history! I loved the added magic and how the rewrites did fit in with the history we know (to a point, you’ll see what I mean if you read the book). The relationship between Jane and G was very sweet. I originally read this because I saw teasers about the show (it was made into an Amazon Prime series) but just with the limited bits I’ve seen of the show and the fact that I’ve read the book, I’m going to say that the book is better. They seem to have dramatized the show and therefore altered the book. I’m still interested in watching the show but I think they made some unnecessary changes.

I went into this with low expectations. I have heard good things about the show adaptation that just came out, and I wanted to read the book first. My assumption was that I'd actually like the show more once I saw it, and the book would feel too cheesy, try-hard, and dated, but there would be changes to smooth it out in the adaptation. Now I've got the opposite feeling and I'm wondering if the show will be able to live up to how fun, earnest, and chaotic this book was. I had such a great time! The audiobook narrator sells the hell out of it, she's giving it 150% for every sentence, and it absolutely worked for me. The romance surprised me as well with how sweet and tender it was. I'm sad the book is over, honestly, I really enjoyed the ride.

What a TREAT of a book! I had so so so much fun with this audiobook, and I've simply fallen in love with both the authors and the incredible narration gift of Ms. Kellgren. I join the scores of people who mourn her loss. This book feels like it was written by fun history and book nerds for fun history and book nerds, and the easter egg quotes from other works totally tickled me. This def feels like a vacation read for me - light and funny and a delicious little happy ending.

this was such a fun and unique read! one of my favorite things about it were the dynamic and strong-willed characters!! jane was my favorite with her bookish interests, strength, and relatibility! i also liked the ways her and
gifford's relationship progressed as the novel went on and they got to know each other better!
speaking of which, i just thought the romance in this novel was done well all-around in regards to both the prominent relationships!

i have to say though, this book got really really cringey at some points. i get that it was part of the whole "humor" aspect of the book but sometimes the jokes just didn't land for me. similarly some of the things that happened i found to just be outright ridicuolous and far-fetched. like i understand that it is not supposed to be a historically accurate story and that many creative liberties were taken, but there were points where things just went too far. also the insertion of the narrator's voice at random points in the middle of the story just wasn't exactly for me either.

i'm starting to sound really negative, but truly, i did enjoy it!! i felt like it had such great vibes and i really enjoyed learning the history surrounding the events. i did a ton of googling and learning about henry viii, his wives, and kids (even though no actual historical events were really potrayed in the book) that i even listed to some of the six the musical soundtrack and now want to go see it lol! i also will likely read the next book in the series so i am glad i picked this one up!

This book was so much fun to read! I’m a sucker for historical fiction (especially Tudor England) and I love fantasy and romance. Mix the 3 together, along with a good sense of humor, and you have a book designed for me.
