only reading this series to get to the continuation after the anime's ending. these first few chapters were definitely better in the anime but maybe that's just because the anime was my introduction the narrative as a whole.

Deadman Wonderland delivers a potent blend of horror and dystopia. This unsettling Japanese tale throws us into a nightmarish world where an amusement park thrives on top of a privatized prison. Here, death row inmates are forced to participate in deadly "games" for their survival. Think Hunger Games with a heavy dose of body horror.

The story introduces a large cast but quickly centers on Ganta, a young man wrongly imprisoned for a massacre. He finds himself befriended by the enigmatic Shiro, a girl with striking white hair. Packed with action, suspense, and a healthy dose of creepy, Deadman Wonderland promises to be an epic series for horror fans.

I love dystopian books, and dystopian manga’s?! Count me in!

To start of, these are one of the goriest mangas I have read, like… there is sooo much gore! I will be giving a review of all 13 books, ofcourse without spoilers ;)

Ten years after the Great Tokyo Earthquake a brutal murder is committed at the a school, with the entire class massacred save for one survivor, Ganta Igarashi. Ganta is not only spared by the mysterious Red man, he also embeds a red crystal shard in Ganta’s chest. But being the only survivor, Ganta is considered a suspect, and he is eventually sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit and sent to Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland isn’t only a prison, it also doubles as a tourist attraction in Japan. The prison guards in Deadman Wonderland can treat and punish the inmates at will, without any consequences to them.

"Pain Inflicted Should Be Returned With Equal Pain."

The inmates at this prison get treated like literal scum, and they get fitted with a special collar that not only monitors vital signs and locations, but also constantly injects poison into the bloodstream of the wearers. This poison needs to be neutralized with a “candy”, which can be obtained through various activites and can also be purchased with Cast Points. Cast Points are a sort of currency, and you can obtain Cast Points by participating and surviving lethal games.

I am not one to be put of by gore, but I have to admit that I was sometimes taken aback by the amount in this manga, and to be honest, I am not sure if I could watch the anime serie. That being said, I did like the story and wanted to find out how it all evolves, what the deal with the Red Man is, get to know the weird inmates better, find out who Shiro is and what the prison itself is all about.

"Couldn't I Be Forgiven For Trying To Make You Feel The Same Pain I Felt?"

Throughout the series we get to know more and more about the villain, the inmates, about Ganta and Shiro, and slowly get a better idea of what is really going on. This story is not at all what I thought it would be, and where the first 6 books were sometimes hard to get through, the last 7 books dragged me in and got me really hooked. I was surprised, happy, but also a bit sad, with how the story ended.

In short, Deadman Wonderland is gory, sometimes hard to stomach, but the characters build up nicely throughout the series and the story keeps you wanting to know more. The ending is… let’s just say… totally unexpected.

Fun fact: The Deadman Wonderland anime series has been banned by the Chinese Government due to its disturbing and gruesome content.

(2023 update : i have not shared This in Ages, for me this was my least favorite Manga among all the manga i have read, The least intricate writing style too, I ll be reading the reviews as usual again with you all!)
Amazing first volume i didn't know anything about Deadman wonderland before i read this
I love it so far interesting world and interesting story and characters
Not as impressive as first volume of Manga i read before like Berserk and Gantz but its right up there with them
And as usual i am more interested in the villain of the story and the pretty girl that we know nothing about
The Red man, and the girl that we don't know if she is wearing clothes or naked lol
