After having read The Art of Racing in the Rain, I had high hopes for Garth Stein's new book, but it was such a disappointment. I didn't like it.

Not convincingly written from the POV of a 14 yr old boy -- even if the speaker is writing years after the fact -- the dialogue is overwrought and unbelievable.

It is important to not compare this novel The Art of Racing in the Rain as that is entirely different in intention as A Sudden Light. Choosing instead to write a ghost story, this novel is no doubt well written and contains an intriguing plot, yet it is desperately in need of a proper edit. In my opinion, 100 pages too long, the novel expounds its twists early then holds on for too long in the second act. Nevertheless, still a strong outing from Stein that's overall story speaks of the importance of legacy and its impact on family.

Wow. I loved this book. It was one that I couldn't put down. I fell in love with the plot and there are some moments of beauty. Trevor was such a real voice that he swept me up in the telling of his story. The book is not without its flaws. Serena was oddly written and oddly developed. There were some questions loved it, but still a great read. This would have made a great epic family story. Overall, a well paced character driven story.

If you like ghosts, secret rooms, and slightly demented family members this is the book for you. It dragged a bit in the middle but overall my kind of book.

I listened to this audio on my drive to Burlington (to hear Garth Stein speak!). A coming-of-age ghost story is not one I naturally gravitate towards, but I actually enjoyed the first 44 chapters. It's a great story and the narrator was really good. The ending though...I didn't care for at all.
