I was absolutely and thoroughly impressed by this. First of all, the obvious aspect of queerness was wonderfully executed. Jay, the protagonist is genderqueer and uses “nontraditional” pronouns (xe/xir). Most of the characters xe’s close to actual gender xim correctly! What a miracle! And the instances of misgendering are not harassment, which is so often the case is stories with GNC characters. It happens, xe calls the person out, he apologizes (kind of). There’s also the polysexuality aspect, which I’m surprised is addressed, but I feel could have been executed better, due to the fact that the one instance of it ends in Jay’s girlfriend leaving xim for someone in their system. However, the fact that it’s addressed at all is impressive to me.
Anyways, got that part out of my system. Now I can talk about the rest of the book. I love love love the style-- colors are great, the formatting is great, and I especially love the scenes where we see Jay slipping in and out of xis depression. One thing I particularly love about graphic novels is the measure of unreality so many seem to show, and Lake Jehovah is no different. Yet this unreality works so well in what is, at its core, a tale of depression.
I’d like to say something profound and meaningful here, but let this suffice: I fucking love Lake Jehovah.
