It is an amazing account of an incredible disaster from the lens of those who survived. Gripping and heart-rending.

MOTHER NATURE vs ARROGANT HUMANS. "On Everest, it is the nature of systems to break down with a vengeance... it is easy to lose sight of the fact that climbing mountains will never be a safe, predictable, rule-bound enterprise." I liked the second half of the book better than the first. I especially liked how the author included criticisms against him and some post-event follow-up. Personally, I'm not sure I'd engage in any activity that has that much risk AND compromises my ability to think clearly. Where even the experts and guides are not immune to deadly mistakes. "When presented with a chance to reach the planet's highest summit, history shows people are surprisingly quick to abandon good judgment."

At the time I listened to this, it had an average of 4.19 stars by 436,526 peeps. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in personal accounts of disasters or needing convincing that arrogance kills.

In the top three books I’ve ever read. It was an emotional rollercoaster and truly painful to put down, I think some of the more haunting moments will stay with me for a long time. Reads more like a novel than any travel or mountaineering writing I’ve ever read, Krakauer has a gift.
