My love of Alicia Keys started with her music the first time I heard it. I've passed that love on to my daughter who hopes to one day play the piano half as well as Alicia. When we saw she had a graphic novel, we had to buy it. I'm so glad we did. This book was incredible. The graphics are detailed and engaging. The plot is both heavy and entertaining/fun. My daughter is only 10 so she didn't full grasp all of the heavier topics the book covers, but she loved the book and it opened quite a few discussions for us. We are a house that discusses social justice and current events regularly so there wasn't anything in the book she didn't have some prior knowledge on, but this time, she was the one making the connections from text to previous conversations and things she'd seen on the news. I think it would also be a fantastic book to open the discussion with children too.
As soon as my daughter finished it, she asked, "When is she writing another one?"

the powers of scarlet witch meets the youth and guys of miles morales in this powerful and fast paced graphic novel. with a strain message, loveable characters and captivating art work, this was a moving and action packed read from start to finish and a great one for younger readers wanting to test the waters with graphic novels.

art style was amazing but the plot, not so much. it lacked a sense of uniqueness to it. i think i've seen way too may iterations of the "teen discovers powers and hides it from family/friends." it also felt too rushed and left things without explanation, especially as a standalone.

Not personally my cup of tea, but still really enjoyable! Good superhero story that’s not by Marvel or DC.
Graphic: Grief, Abandonment, Blood, Body shaming, Bullying, Classism, Emotional abuse, Gun violence, Hate crime, Injury/Injury detail, Kidnapping, Panic attacks/disorders, Police brutality, Racism, and Violence
Moderate: Child death

Trigger warnings:
For young adult readers looking for superhero novels outside of the typical Marvel or DC universes, this is something you should check out. Girl on Fire is punchy and engaging from beginning to end. After a traumatic run-in the police, Lolo stumbles onto a stunning secret - she has powers. And when you suddenly have superpowers, life tangles in a way you can't always control.
The graphics in this book are stunning and the fast-paced story-line will fly by. Built on a foundation of fierce loyalty, courage and family strength it has all the staples for a stellar superhero comic. Readers should note that the themes - police brutality & gang violence- suggest that this is ideal for an older teenage audience.
