I recognize that this is a classic novel and it is very good in that regard, but compared to modern novels it is a struggle to get through. There is are pointless discussions abound and some of the best moments are told secondhand. I'm glad to have gotten through it for historical reasons and the cultural touchstone that it is.

I read it the first year I was married and living in the heat of Khartoum, Sudan. The cool wind across the heath and the sizzling romance were just right. Read it again about two years ago and fell in love all over.
