Suggested by shelf talker at Powell’s. Good read. I look forward to reading other LMB books.

I liked this book - sort of. Enough to want to read part two of three. It was an easy read, just what I was looking for to relax after a day of NaNoWriMo focus. Fawn is a little too much the naive and helpless stereotype, and Dag is a little to much the gruff strong and silent type - flawed and needing someone to redeem him. More of a father figure to her it seems. I would have liked more of this Lakewalker magic, there was just enough described to tease. Maybe it's being drawn out for the following books.

I love fantastical senses, and the ground sense depictions were so lush and lovely. Dag's descriptions of Fawn were so, well, fawning and besotted. This author loves to write her couples on treks and adventures.

This was good, but I would have reduced the amount of romance novel in it, but probably a lot of readers like it. Great characters, a well developed world, scary villains, plenty of excitement, but some real slow stretches too.

When I first took out this book, I thought it would have an actual plot. I knew there was romance involved, but if I had known that that's what the ENTIRE BOOK would be about I'm not sure I would have bothered. The only reason it gets two stars instead of one -or none- is because i really enjoyed the Bujold's writing style. And naturally i\I'm going to read the next one, if only to find out the secret with the whole knife shtick.

LMB is an amazing writer. Ultimately, I enjoyed this book, and I know it is the first in a series, but it seemed incomplete. I did enjoy the world, the characters, and most things about the romance.

I can't say that this is my favorite Bujold, but it is a solidly written romance. The problem is that it's one book split into two, which never fails to irritate me. I liked the story, I found some of the ideas interesting, I'm glad to continue reading the next book in the series.
