i stopped reading this for almost two months but i think, retrospectively, it was beneficial for me to take a breather. Otherwise i’d have been in bits on finishing, because i basically was already. The Great War, to me, feels a lot more personal and ... intimate? I’m not sure i can explain myself, but this play is excellent. I’m yearning to see it on stage. Stanhope is such a strong, real, desperate man. Each character is just so human, and although there’s a lot of content quite like this kicking around these days, Sherriff’s personal story, publishes in 1928 truly lays the ground work; it sets the bar high.
