Different flavor than the Imperial Radch Trilogy and it can be off putting for that reason if that's what you expect go in.
Three different narrator's prioritizing three different things and despite being 30ish-60ish all precious babies.
Cannibalism, gender, identity, coming of age whenever the fuck you can, and violently insisting on independence from the systems and things that break us.

Really enjoyed this. I love the imperial radch setting, and this was another great entry. Liked the different pov, and it kept me engaged. Pretty much read it in one sitting.

I quite enjoyed Translation State, the latest in stallment of the Imperial Radch series.  While I did not like it as much as the trilogy itself, I did like it significantly more than its predecessor Provenance.  Indeed, this book did much of what I wished the prior one would -- in my review of Provenance I wrote that "I would have liked more focus on the alien species and the upcoming conclave, but that was treated moreso as the backdrop" and this book focuses much more on both the significance of the conclave and the alien species, with significant characters who are Presger, Presger Translators, and Geck.  I like how the themes of translation/language and identity are treated here, and for the most part I enjoyed the main characters (the way Qven and Reet's dynamic develops toward the end was a little too angst-filled for my preferences but I do like them overall; Enae read very much younger to me than hir age).  The plot was fast paced and held my interest - an exciting space opera! - and I like the alternating POV chapters.  I'll happily read the next Radch book.

Ann Leckie's books never fail to pull me in and utterly engross me, and this was no exception. It was such a delight to return to this world, and to have more pieces of it filled in. In particular Translation State worked so nicely in concert with both Imperial Radch and Provenance - seeing some familiar faces and getting different perspectives on previous events. However I also think this would work well as a standalone too. With all new perspectives, we get reintroduced to the world and the events through their eyes.
I love how comfortable the world seems - even when we're with a character who's somewhere new or distressing, I feel like I have a sense for what's going on, and I didn't feel like I had to get a third of the way into the book before I figured out the cast of characters or how the world works. Even when there was a bit of a mystery to be solved, I didn't feel frustrated because I trusted that things would make sense eventually. And they did! I love reading a book I can trust to tell me a good, satisfying story
