This book could have been a lot better if part of the middle had just been taken out. I'm writing this for anyone who is halfway through, bored, and wondering if it's worth sticking out. Because that was me! It is worth it, but maybe skim ahead a little bit.

This book made me want to read more YA books that take place somewhere in Mexico!

People have been recommending this all over bookstagram for quite a while now and it's one that's been sat on my TBR for aaaaages. I'm really glad I picked it up!

When Noemí receives a desperate, manic letter from her cousin, alarm bells start to ring. Her father decides she must go and try to get her the help she needs. Her cousin, Catalina's, whirlwind romance did not sit well with the family, and now the letter. Plus, how much did they all really know about their husband?

Noemí arrives at High Place, a little corner of England in Mexico, and is immediately on edge. The family, Catalina's strange behaviour... it's just not adding up. And then Noemí starts to feel as though she's going mad too. What is going on in this house?

This was quite a slow starter, but very intriguing and kept me reading. I found Noemí quite one-dimensional and hard to connect with initially, but once the story gets going, I FLEW through it! It was creepy, gothic and very unsettling. Everything I expected and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who's looking for something strange and beautifully-written. I especially enjoyed the way the mushrooms were personified, a theme throughout that seemed to suffocate the house and everyone in it.

*chief's kiss*
