Positives:
- written in an easily understandable way with little jargon
- captures a vast time period beautifully into a relatively short book
- the authors anecdotes add much needed personality to the book.
Negatives:
- can be dry at points
- perhaps more of a fault of the subject matter itself but the book can be quite overwhelming and depressing.

It took me an embarrassing amount of time to finish this book. However, it was great! It didn't fall into the trap of other similar books where the author ends up repeating the same point over and over again. I particularly loved the section on Cuvier and the chapter on ocean acidification. An excellent and interesting book.

This was a very interesting book, and damning as it relates to our species. The human race are clearly causing the 'sixth extinction' period and it bodes poorly for generations to come, though there are interesting and minuscule examples of heroics and helpful people who have gong to extraordinary lengths to save a species or two. The book was interesting, but tended to ramble slightly between (interesting) chapters regarding the perils of the acidity of the oceans, the loss of various species and other. in other words it almost didn't matter which chapter you picked up at a given time. Worth reading.
