There’s really no one who writes like Gail Carriger. Her world building is wonderful and her books are always a playful take on steampunk. I can’t get enough.

Cute story. Sophronia was sent to finishing school in order to learn how to be a proper lady and a successful intelligencer/assassin. I thought the lessons would be more fun, but the book mostly focused on subversive tactics like eyelash fluttering, handkerchief dropping, and well-timed fainting. Yawn. There wasn't much action. I want the good (kickass!) stuff! Perhaps this was the case because it was only her first year at the school and the dirty stuff is taught in subsequent years. I hope the next books have descriptions of more rough and tumble lessons and go into detail about vampires, werewolves, Picklemen, flywaymen, etc. instead of just putting them into the story and not elaborating. I need specifics!

As my first steampunk read that I recall, I found this to be inventice and adventurous and hope further books expound more on the school and many of the characters.

This book was well worth the wait! Miss Carriger did yet another excellent job in this adventure into YA literature. She was able to keep all of the wit and unexpected twists that made her Parasol Protectorate series so enjoyable. Her new characters as lovable and meddling as her previous.
While this would work beautifully as a stand alone series, I would however, recommend that one read the Parasol Protectorate first, as this series takes place earlier in the same world, with previous characters returning, so having already known them made this an even more enjoyable read.

If you like Steampunk/action/girls know how to kick asses, then this book is for you.
Ofcourse, the kick asses all happen in a refined and cultured way (most of the time).
It was a fun and good book. I loved how our main girl was smart, witty and did a whole lot of good. Also her being almost the only one who didn't mind the sooties, and just treated them als normal.
I can't wait until the next book. :)
