This book was a fun read, but it tried to do too much. The concept of life after the Chosen Ones have defeated the Big Bad would have been great on its own! Similarly, the magic system was interesting, and I could have read a whole book just about that. All of this (plus the other twist that I won't give away) made the book feel a little jumbled, but I still enjoyed it.

I didn’t connect with this one. Seemed slow and didn’t really have a strong plot line. It was tagged as an adult read but gave off vibes of a YA. If I wasn’t listening to the audio i think I would have DNF’d this.

❌ DNF at 25% (p. 108)
❌ Unhaul
The intrigue is just not there and the pacing is too slow.

I really struggled to finish this book. The plot sounded interesting but just failed. Needless to say that I won’t be reading a prequel/sequel should it come along.

The start of the book sets the tone of a book that isn’t at all in the adult fiction realm. I’m my opinion part one could have been much shorter to allow for more exploration of the rest of the book.

Sloan and matts 10 relationship seems like it started 10 years ago and didn’t move at all through the period between them getting together and the book starting.

The excerpts of articles, memos, books were a nice addition both to aid in building the story and world, but also in the layout and format changes.

Much of the story was predictable, including the resurectuonists reveal. And the ending sequence of the villains memories and their ultimate motive was rushed and poorly explained.

Sloans character overall was interesting to follow along with and the world itself was intriguing.

Our romance if you can call it that seemed rushed and empty with me not feeling a great deal of attachment to them.

So many pages could have been saved if Roth wasn’t describing every street name and basic building for pages at a time.
