This book's central theme of courage being a key characteristic of manhood really resonated with me and is something I've thought about on multiple occasions since finishing the book. I feel like in the moments when courage was necessary and I did not act in my own life, I had the exact same thoughts Henry did when he was trying to justify his own weakness. But his change and his realization that the demons(confederates) he had envisioned in his head were not as terrible as he imagined really gave me a sense of hope. He realizes he can do this, he can survive this. It really spoke to me.

I have to read this book for class and i have to say its a little challenging but it explains war well.

This slim novel reads like a fable on war. Though it isn't particularly artful, its grim realism illustrates clearly all the confusion, both internal and external, of 19th-century combat.

Summary:  Henry Flemming has enlisted as a soldier for the Union army in the Civil War, but as he gets closer and closer to his first battle, his confidence in his ability to withstand the fighting without fleeing wavers. This novel is a fascinating look at war that takes place within the mind of a soldier.
