Cosby is such a talented author and his books never disappoint. In comparison to others, this one wasn’t my favorite although I can’t pinpoint a specific reason. I did feel like this book focused more on the community than individual characters, which was cool. It’s always rare to find a book that you can call the town a character and have it done well and this is one of those cases.

I rather enjoy a Christ-haunted psychological terror type novel and this was very solid. Great writing, plot, setting.... Very unsettling but beautifully written!

Absolutely enthralling! I had never read anything by him before and absolutely loved it. I listened to the audiobook and loved it. The plot moves at a good pace. And tbh I think it would be an excellent tv series, in the right hands.

This was so dark and twisted but so layered. Definitely not for the faint of heart. I loved it and was genuinely creeped out. I would love to see this turned into a movie.

The setting of this book is a gritty southern town in Virginia. You have a newly elected sherif who is black. He was voted in from the black community and the new residents that are moving in. The other side of the county is white and they are apart of a group called the sons of the confederacy. As if the racial tension was not enough. You also have the backdrop of a serial killer running amuck in the town.

Please read trigger warnings before diving into this one.

S. A. Cosby does a wonderful job describing the town and the tension that Titus (sheriff) has to navigate through. However, there were a few plot holes for me on this one. He introduces tons of characters some who do not have anything to do with the major crime that is being investigated. I also wanted to know more about the connection of the actual criminals once they were uncovered. He left too many loose ends for me.

Regardless I felt this book was just ok.

This book needs a SERIOUS trigger warning for child murder, child sexual assault, and violence. I read this because it was on Obama’s list of books from 2023. The story was excellent! Don’t get me wrong. Titus is a likable character who just wants to be a good sheriff and he is! The topics in this story are just so serious. I don’t think I would have read it if I had known. Reading through it though it was good and i loved figuring out who the killer was! Definitely a good story just very heavy.

Thrilling, mysterious and I couldn’t see any of it coming. I really enjoyed the ride. This author is someone who can weave in social commentary so beautifully with real life, gore, and small town life. He never misses. Highly recommend. The ending and whodunnit lost .25 for me because it felt not connected. But still, read this book!!!!
