Very entertaining and informative at the same time. I loved the humor in this book, made the learning of the historical facts much more fun. I will be reading the rest in this series of books.

West writes a sardonic yet informative history focused on possibly the most important date in English history, the year of the Norman conquest. He delves into the personalities (as much as one can, after over a thousand years) of the English rulers before the Conquest, and the Normans afterward, until the accession of Henry II, the first of the Plantagenets.

I'm something of a self-taught medievalist, and I learned things from reading this book. The years between 800 and 1000 are still rather a mystery to many, and this book shone a light into those dark corners.

A very interesting book and an easy read. Lots of information that had, till now passed me by. An enjoyable way to learn about a period I don't know nearly enough about.

The author skips back and forth a great deal and includes outdated, offensive, and inaccurate stereotypes.
