4 stars: an enjoyable thrill ride cut from the same cloth as Jack Reacher and John Wick.

If you’re a fan of action films, then this should be right up your alley. I am one of those people who do not and so ‘Fearless‘ and I didn’t quite get along as well as I had hoped from a M.W Craven book. In case you didn’t realise from the book description, if you’re going in looking for something resembling Craven’s Poe/Bradshaw series, this is really not it.

First of all, I didn’t particularly like Ben. Hero or not, he comes across as incredibly arrogant. And the fact that he has no fear makes that even more apparent. Being fearless doesn’t necessarily put just Ben himself in danger, but also those around him. Since nothing frightens him, he is incapable of assessing all the things a normal person *would* fear. That being said, not shaking in his boots when he really should be does sometimes lead to fun interactions when the people on the other side realise he doesn’t react the way they would expect.

I have nothing bad to say about the plot. It’s a good and solid one. It held my attention, and just like Ben, I knew something was off but I couldn’t at all figure out why. The pace is spot on, pretty much all systems go from page one, and the short and snappy chapters will have you turning/swiping the pages like there’s no tomorrow. ‘Fearless‘ is without a doubt an action-packed thriller that’ll get your heart pumping.

But … it’s also often extremely violent. Think squishing eyes out, or bending elbows until they no longer resemble an elbow. There were scenes with psychical fights that I admit I skimmed, and there may have been a moment or two where I felt the brutality was maybe not even needed.

This is one of those books that has left me conflicted. I’m at a loss as to how to rate it. Because if you take away or simmer down the violence, I’m sure I would have enjoyed it more. And in an odd kind of way, I have already decided that I would actually pick up the next one in the series, regardless. So, I guess there’s that 💁🏼‍♀️.

I love all of M W Craven’s books and, although this one is very different from the police procedural he normally writes, it is excellent. Similar idea to Lee Child’s books but meatier.

Excellent!

This is exactly what you want if you feel like a highly unlikely but enjoyable 'lone wolf' style thriller. Plenty of twists and thrills and even a little humour. More please.
