At first, I thought this book would be nothing but a vulgarity- a parody of working class struggle through the especially coarse eyes of the narrator, however, Balestrini is more honest and interesting than that. Instead, we see the story transform before our eyes: the reader begins to see the situation through the changing eyes of the previously selfish and apolitical protagonist, until the scope is immense. From vulgarity and first person narration, to sweeping oratory, to a clear picture of class struggle in Italy, and finally in a harrowing personal narrative.

This book exceeded my expectations. If you're at all interested in this, stick with it, and it will reward your patience.
